Nestled in the heart of Gram in Haderslev Municipality, Gram Parish, Frøs Herred, lies the majestic Gram Castle. This historic site, dating back to 1232, is a living representation of Denmark’s rich historical legacy. Initially mentioned in King Valdemar Sejr’s “Jordebog,” Gram Castle was a crown property, symbolizing royal power and architectural grandeur. The original structure, located approximately 3 kilometers northwest of the current castle, laid the foundation for a legacy that spans centuries.
As the pages of time turned, Gram Castle witnessed a shift in ownership, marking a new era in its history. By 1314, it became a part of Duke Erik 2 of Sønderjylland’s lineage, signaling a transition from royal to noble hands. The exact location of the main building during this period remains shrouded in mystery, with several ancient sites in the vicinity hinting at its past glory.
The late 14th century saw Gram Castle come under the stewardship of Henneke Limbek, a descendant of Claus Limbek. This period marked the beginning of significant changes, not just in ownership but also in the architectural evolution of the castle. Around 1467, Ditlev Reventlow took over the estate, ushering in a pivotal phase in the castle’s history.
Under the Reventlow family, the 1500s became a transformative century for Gram Castle . It was during their tenure that the buildings were relocated to their present site. The current east wing, a relic from this era, stands as a testament to the architectural vision of the time.
The Schack Influence and Modern Developments
The main building, now a protected heritage site, is a three-winged structure surrounded by moats, overlooking the scenic Slotssøen on the northeastern outskirts of Gram. The main wing, built around 1670 by Field Marshal Hans Schack, reflects the artistic and architectural sensibilities of the 17th century. Hans Schack’s contribution extended beyond construction; in 1673, he opened Gram Slotskro, adding a new dimension to the estate’s offerings.
Today, the east wing serves as a private residence, while the south and west wings often host public events, showcasing the castle’s adaptability and enduring appeal.
Cultural Footprint and Contemporary Ownership
Gram Castle has also emerged as a cultural hub. In 2014, it was the venue for TV Syd’s knitting competition “Den Store Strikkedyst,” a testament to its ongoing relevance in the public imagination. This 12-week event underscored the site’s ability to blend history with contemporary culture.
Further adding to its modern narrative, in 2016, estate owner and director Svend Brodersen revealed that the Norwegian discount chain Rema 1000 owns a significant stake in ‘Gram og Nybøl Godser A/S’, commonly known as Gram Castle. This partnership highlights the fusion of historical legacy with modern enterprise, ensuring that Gram Castle remains a relevant and vibrant part of the community.
